My Voice, 2025
selling my voice for $50,000 USD" was on display at TRAMPS nyc as part of the Signal Whispers group show. The piece is a hard drive displayed in a beechwood box, the hard drive containing enough recordings of my voice for whomever purchases it to train a few different AI models on my voice, like the one you are hearing now, which is my reading aloud voice. 50,000 dollars is approximately the "going rate" for voice actors to sell their voices to be used as AI models.
With this, I am thinking about how I can extract a piece of my trans-ness, and make it a commodity object that can be desirable instead of something that incites harassment. My voice is often a sore subject for me as it has, many times, been the tell for others that I am transgender, and therefore a target. Sharing my voice, and the rights to use it with the highest bidder gives some comfort in the way that I will not be the only one that finds value in the way I speak or move about the world.
